tirsdendreams: (found my way)
I was trying out a new World of Warcraft free server, PvP but it wasn't intant level 80 yet it seemed to be sort of set up for that, like how you can only go to specific areas in the world. I remember rolling a human but I forget the class, it wasn't one that I'm super-proficient in. However, I also remember her being Horde... I have no idea how that worked. Nevermind that I don't play Alliance anymore anyways.

Logging in initially sent me to this very gothic, huge room that had a lot of stuff on the floor and was obviously custom created by the devs. The stuff on the floor seemed to be already-sparkling quest items even though I had no quest yet. I thought it looked like there were 5 different types of items, most of which make so little sense now I can't even describe them in the waking world but one was a ring and one was a mirrored shield. There were a whole bunch of copies of these things around, so that it wouldn't be hard to find them if there were a lot of starting players.

There was an extravagantly-dressed lady who was obviously the initial quest-giver, and I think she was scripted to be saying things to me. I remember something about the Horde having secured a few resources in the eastern part of the world, so that was a hint that there was tradeskills on that server. Meanwhile, I was curious to see if I could loot the quest items before getting the quest, so I tried and was able to. Three items later all the quest items stopped sparkling, and I realized I must have all of them even though I hadn't tried picking up one of the rings yet. Then it seemed like I noticed the ring was actually just part of one of the weirder objects I'd already picked up.

I talked to the lady, got the quest, and turned it in immediately. At this point it was scripted to transition me on to the next part of the introduction, and dream logic sort of mixed the concept of a loading screen with information on the server-specific game stuff, with me reading an actual printed magazine that included information and advertisements from that server.

There was something about collecting badges, which were rendered as really pretty gold and silver circle things with twirly patterns in them, like oversized pendants almost but not made for a real necklace. If you collected something like 49 of them (not sure on the exact number), you got a crystalline mask that was reeeeally pretty and I don't think it actually had any magical properties, it just looked super-cool. It was gem-cut all over to contour in a mask shape that was sort of like a two-sided Phantom Of The Opera mask.

I knew it probably took a lot of work to get that many badges, but I was starting to get really excited about this. I was also realizing that I really should have rolled a class that I could level quickly (I think this was supposed to be at least a 5x server) and could also already PvP decently even though I am not the super-PvP sort of player. Although I knew the earlier levels could be annoying, I decided then that I was going to log out as soon as possible and roll a male blood elf priest instead, and it would be Aster as is one of my favorite characters for doing so.

The next area finished loading and it was basically some sort of huge cathedral-like main hall, with me off to the left side and a big scripted thing with the Lich King up on the central dais going on with him talking about... I don't remember. And for some reason, the Lich King was Kael'thas. Meanwhile I realized I could log out now, but as I did that I received a warning message about how if I logged out now, my character wouldn't be able to survive without the Lich King's.... something about his having to take newly remade people with him in some kind of ritual for giving them sustenance from captured beings or something. Odd, it looked like if you quit at that point you couldn't keep the character.

Well, whatever, I confirmed my choice, and then it took the game's point of view over to a side room in the same cathedral-ish building, further to the left of where I'd been before. My character was there begging me not to do this, and I had a sort of "are you sure?" dialogue message waiting. I confirmed my choice again, and then the chat screen had some sort of message about how the banshee was actually sorry she had to do this but she had no choice. A banshee then appeared from above, coming through the ceiling like a ghost (because technically that's what she was), and came down and took a swipe at my character with her claws.

My character fell over dead, and yet somehow now looked just like the banshee who had just attacked her. There was some kind of message about "twenty minutes" as another loading screen came up, and I wondered if I was now going to have to wait 20 mins to create a new character, or if there was some kind of last-ditch ability to change one's mind on a deleted character for 20 mins. If it were the latter, I didn't care, I'd just make Aster and ignore the girl character till she went on moratorium, and delete her for good. I was just hoping that I was being loaded into the character list / creation screens and not somewhere else that'd drag the process out.

Then I woke up.
